Phu Quoc could be a very mountainous and densely forested Island of approx. 600 sq kms situated within the Gulf of Thailand. Its concerning forty eight km in length south to north at its longest purpose and nineteen km at its widest purpose east to west within the way north.
The Island includes a population of approx. 90,000 individuals and is forty five kms west of Ha Tien on the Vietnamese mainland and no over five km off the south east coast of Cambodia.
This supernatural Island is surrounded by a number of smaller islands mainly to the south and arguably has some of most beautiful beaches in Vietnam as well as some of the best seafood.
Phu Quoc island vietnam is not really a part of the Mekong delta and also it doesnt share the same extraordinary ability as the Mekong delta to produce rice or fruit, this is mainly due to the lack of soil quality and the inaccessible terrain on the Island.
Phu Quoc is however home to reputedly the best Fish sauce (nuoc mam) in the world, slowly however Tourism is catching up as main source of revenue but seafood is still the main industry in Phu Quoc, the Island is also well known to produce high quality pepper that is exported all over the world.
Another point of interest in Phu Quoc is the islands native Dog, this dog was originally a wild animal and later trained as a hunting dog by the local people.
These animals have unusually sharp teeth (as they tear their food when they eat it rather than bite) and have claws that over the years have been conditioned for catching their prey and are razor sharp, in saying this generally their bark is worse than their bite!
These days they are very domesticated animals and its hard to go anywhere on the Island without seeing one!
